Who am I?

I am a long-time mineral collector (since I was 10 years old). Since 2006, I have also been a mineral dealer. At any given time, I have several hundred mineral specimens for sale, in all sizes and price ranges, on my web site - OBG Gems & Minerals.

There is an active RSS feed on the left side of this page, titled "Mineral Specimens", which is continuously updated as I add new specimens. Just click on the title of the one you are interested in and it will take you directly to that specimen.

You may read about my background in more detail on my main website.

I also maintain The Rockhounds Information Page. Started in 1994, it is one of the oldest and most popular sources of information for mineral collectors on the web.

I started this site on ning.com to be a global meeting place for all persons interested in mineralogy and mineral collecting. It is open to all. There is no requirement or approval required for membership other than an interest in these topics.

The only rules are that you keep your content focused on these topics - no politics, abuse, personal attacks, or flaming - and no spam!

I hope you enjoy this site and find it interesting and helpful.

Here is a really neat scrollable 3D image wall of some of my specimens!

Here is a slideshow of some of my thumbnail specimens.

So ya wanna be a mineral dealer, eh? - Part 3 - "What could possibly go wrong?"

Authored : 2/22/2009

As promised, in this installment, I'll share some of my show and other "experiences".

I have done about 8 shows in my brief mineral dealer "career":

Club shows: Bisbee (once - my very first show); Sierra Vista (twice); Flagg (twice) Large shows: Denver (once); TGMS (twice)

My First Show

My first show was the 2007 "resurrected" Bisbee show at its new venue at the Queen Mine Tour building (from an attendee… Continue

So ya wanna be a mineral dealer, eh? - Part 2 - "How hard can it be?"

Authored: 2/20/2009

OK, as promised, now we get to the heart of the matter, what it takes to actually make a specimen available for sale.

I've never actually analyzed this before broken down into it's components, so this will be an interesting exercise for me too.

We have 1 preliminary step (prepping the flat) then 2 different paths - for sale at a show and for sale on my web site.

Getting the flat ready

1) Buy the… Continue

TUCSON: Another perspective

Authored: 2/16/2009

Having read the numerous comments, here and elsewhere, about the high price of mineral specimens, I have another perspective I'd like to share with you.

First off, some basic comments. I agree that there are a lot of cases (far too many) of exorbitant pricing out there (online, shows, take your pick). I've seen pricing at Tucson and elsewhere that I truly feel is just plain nuts. What I want to convey is that I think that a lot of what has been said and… Continue

So ya wanna be a mineral dealer, eh? - Part 1

Authored: 2/18/2009

As promised, here is the first installment on what being a mineral dealer is all about - at least through my eyes. This first post will give you some basic info so you can view what I say later in the proper context.

1) I am not an "established" dealer yet, nor am I a high end dealer. While I have been into mineralogy since I was about 10 (50 years ago) and an active collector on an off during those years, I just started this about 2.5 years ago. So, as… Continue

The Strange World of the Mineral Dealer

Mineral Collectors,

A few months back, I was asked to start a thread on another forum on what my experience as a mineral dealer has been like. The catalyst for it was a bunch of posts by people complaining about the high cost of mineral specimens for sale at shows.

I am going to post the 4 installments of the resulting series of articles that I wrote here for your enjoyment (and hopefully to jump-start some activity here in our new group).

In order to make… Continue

Hi Tom, How are the cigars and lattes? I went to my geology field camp late month and it was amazing. Hiking, camping and studing the geology for 30 days. How's OBG international? I worked in Bob's Lab this summer and saw your good friend Marcus a few times. Well hopefully I'll see you at the september TGMS meeting.
